Simon Thurley outlines English Heritage's plans for 2012
Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, has outlined the historic environment organisation's plans for the year ahead in a speech at Apsley House, London.
A number of schemes are already underway as part of the National Heritage Collection - such as the construction of new visitor facilities and restoration work at Stonehenge.
Elsewhere, Queen Victoria's private beach at Osborne on the Isle of Wight will be opened to the public for the first time this year and will include a restored stone shelter.
Other priorities for English Heritage includes its Heritage at Risk scheme, while there will be an additional £1m invested in The Challenge Fund to be matched by philanthropists.
Thurley said: "We all hope that 2012, the year of the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be one of renewal and optimism."
