SkillsActive, is launching the Work Based Learning Pathway pilot in sports management, leadership and coaching in Cardiff.

As part of the 14-19 agenda in Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) is working in partnership with SkillsActive to pilot ‘Work Based Learning Pathways’ (WBLP), allowing young people to combine academic studies and a blend of vocational orientated learning and work experience.

The WBLP pilot in sports management, leadership and coaching will offer hands-on learning within the leisure industry in Wales.

It will aim to provide practical learning and invaluable experience of what it’s like to work in a real-life business.

SkillsActive are working with a number of schools from across Cardiff, and each student taking part will complete a BTEC in Sport at level 2, consisting of 50 days work experience and a range of additional qualifications including NVQ level 1 in Sport & Recreation, alongside their core GCSE programmes of study.

Eleri George, Development Officer Young People & 14-19 reform in Wales said: “The WBLP will provide young people with opportunities to experience different styles of learning, learn in different settings (often in a work related or workshop environment), and make informed choices about the kind of work they wish to do.

“Practical skills are learnt alongside national curriculum subjects to give students the knowledge to work in the sport and leisure sector.”
