The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington DC, US, will launch a temporary exhibit featuring objects found in the ruins of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks.

Called September 11: Remembrance and Reflection, the exhibition will run from 3 September to 11 September to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks.

Among the more than 50 objects on show will be a briefcase left on the 103rd floor of the North Tower by a survivor and pieces of aircraft found during the cleaning up of the site.

The US Congress designated the museum as the official repository for 9/11 materials in 2002, so that objects, photographs and documents would be preserved permanently in the museum's collections to help future generations of historians and visitors comprehend the "horrific events, their roots and their long-term consequences".
