Sochi to host Winter Olympics in 2014
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has chosen Sochi, Russia, as the host city of the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The decision means that the country will host its first ever Winter Games.
The city, located on the coast of the Black Sea, submitted its Candidature File to the IOC in Lausanne on January 8, 2007.
The city’s plans for the Games feature 11 custom-built sports venues, located in two clusters less than one hour away from each other. These are the "Coastal Cluster" for ice events and the "Mountain Cluster" in Krasnaya Polyana.
The Russian government has offered its full support to the bid and has implemented a US$12bn Federal investment programme (FTP) to develop the Sochi region into a year-round, world-class resort destination with new infrastructure and accommodation by 2014.
As part of the programme, new transport, accommodation and utilities infrastructure will be created.
