South West Tourism launches Green scheme
South West Tourism has launched its Green Tourism Business Scheme following a five-year pilot involving more than 50 businesses in the South Hams area.
The scheme, which is operated by Green Business and promoted by South West Tourism, offers businesses expert advice and presents gold, silver and bronze awards.
It was officially launched on 28 November with a showcase of the tourism businesses which trialled the scheme.
“The Green Tourism Business Scheme provides an excellent example of what the regional priority of sustainable tourism means in practice,” said Malcolm Bell, chief executive of South West Tourism.
“It offers the chance to save money, improve quality and enhance their image – that’s something that’s relevant to every tourism business in the region and we’re delighted to be able to offer this opportunity.”
The award system is designed to be used as a marketing tool for businesses; South West Tourism claims surveys show 80 per cent of holidaymakers would choose a green tourism award winner over an equivalent destination without an award.
A brochure produced to highlight the achievements covers energy, water and waste saving measures as well as emphasising the use of local and home grown food. Details: +44 (0)1392 353234
