Spa consultancy, development and management company, Spa Synergy, had a good turn out for their inaugural spa management course, which took place in Singapore last month, with all delegates passing with flying colours.

The Essential Spa & Salon Management course was organised in conjunction with the Tourism Management Institute and was designed to develop higher standards of education for the spa and beauty industry and to raise the level of competency within the spa and salon community in Singapore and Asia.

The course covered all aspects of operations, including marketing, finance and human relations, as well as training and standards.

As part of the four-day course, delegates were taken on a tour of some of Singapore’s top spas, including Amrita Spa, owned and managed by the Raffles Group, Spa Botanica, Singapore’s first and only garden spa and the recently opened Oriental Spa, operated by SPORTathlon/Fitness First.

Fiona McAlister, who manages The Oriental Spa and who was one of the course tutors, believes courses such as this, are invaluable to the spa industry in Singapore.

“The challenge we face in the industry is that we repeatedly throw people into positions when they have not had the appropriate training. On so many occasions, the training for spa managers is on the job, vicariously learning as they go. This course shares valuable knowledge and allows participants to understand the importance of the management positions and skills required.”

Four more workshops will take place next year, at the Tourism Management Institute in Singapore. The dates are yet to be announced.
