Birmingham City Council (BCC) is to debate a framework agreement for the tender process to build a leisure complex in Sparkhill, which could allow for future projects across the city.

The council's cabinet will meet on 5 September to consider the agreement, which could lead to approved contractors being considered for "future community pools" in Birmingham. Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre is to be demolished and rebuilt under proposals given the green light in May, with councillors now looking to save on an original estimate of £13.5m.

It is hoped that the Sparkhill scheme - to include a 25m, six-lane pool; a learner pool; and a 70-station adult fitness suite - will provide guidance for future pool provision. A 20-station junior fitness suite; a dance and exercise studio; changing facilities; a reception area; and a community room are also proposed for the Stratford Road site.

BCC cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture Martin Mullaney said: "We can make considerable savings on the Sparkhill project and that's why we have decided to go out to tender. "Now we hope the Sparkhill procurement process can lay the groundwork for any future community pool projects in Birmingham."
