Spike Island to be revamped
Spike Island – a visual arts studio in Bristol – is set to undergo a £2.25m redevelopment.
The revamp will provide a further 8,000sq ft (740sq m) of gallery space as well as improved facilities for artists and designers, including a ground floor café.
Lucy Byatt, artistic director of Spike Island, said: “We will have a major gallery space in which we can showcase artists of national and international importance. We will also be able to offer greatly improved facilities to artists and designers from the UK and abroad.”
Caruso St John Architects designed the new interior and the arts facility will reopen in May.
The project has received funding from Arts Council England, South West, the South West Regional Development Agency and the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation.
Nick Capaldi, director of Arts Council England south west, said: “Spike Island increases the opportunities for artists and the production of art is now secure for many generations to come. I feel sure that this outstanding centre for the visual arts will attract new audiences from Bristol and further afield.” Details: www.spikeisland.org.uk
