Sports for Devon's schools
Devon Council has injected almost £11m into sports and education facilities at secondary schools throughout the county.
The largest grant of £3.5m will fund indoor sports facilities and grass pitches at Teign School in Kingsteignton, while a water sports and activity centre at Haven Banks in Exeter will benefit from £2.7m.
A further £2.5m will be released to develop a sports centre for Teignmouth Community College, with hopes that Teignbridge District Council will be able to help contribute more capital towards the project to enable community sports facilities to be provided at the site.
A £500,000 award from the council in addition to the same amount of funding from British Cycling will help pay for an external velodrome in the area.
Deputy leader and executive councillor for children's services, John Smith, said: "This is another excellent series of examples of the county council using its resources to help stimulate the economy.
"This comes on top of our £180m building programme for schools, children's centres and youth facilities.
"I am particularly pleased to see that we are fulfilling our pledge to provide modern sports facilities for the students of Teign School and Teignmouth Community College.
"We are also looking to capitalise on the 2012 London Olympics with what could be a cycling facility of national significance at Kingsteignton and a major watersports centre in Exeter."
