Sports hub proposed for Worcester
Plans for a community sports complex in Hindlip, Worcester, are being created by private development firm Sir Bert Millichip Sports (SBMS).
The proposals, which are due to undergo public consultation in the next couple of months, would provide a "centre of excellence for many sports," said a spokesperson for South Worcestershire Joint Core Strategy.
The complex is dependent on the council's plans for a 24,000 home scheme, which is being created by district council's Malvern Hills and Wychavon and Worcester County City.
The proposed plans for a 250-hectare (618-acre) site are understood to feature a 50m swimming pool, a multi-purpose sports arena, a facility for gymnastics and martial arts and an all-year round tennis centre.
Other planned facilities include a secondary cricket ground for Worcestershire County Cricket Club with a pavilion and an indoor cricket school, a new football academy and pitches as well as a medical campus for the Worcester Sports Academy.
There are also plans to include a regional golf teaching academy and 80-hectare (200 acre)18-hole championship golf course on land used as the former head quarters of the West Mercia Constabulary, adjacent to the sports hub.
If planning permission for the scheme is granted, SBMS hopes to have work completed by 2011.
The plans have, however, already attracted opposition due to the extensive housing scheme and concerns that it would infringe on the green belt.
Peter Luff, MP for Mid Worcestershire, said: "All of this development – sports centre and probably many of the homes - would be on green belt, which is supposed to provide protection from urban sprawl. Much less significant proposals for the area have already been rejected – and rightly so.”
