Sports retailer to anchor Warrington scheme
Sports retailer Decathlon is set to open a new purpose-built 25,000sq ft (2,323sq m) store at the £30m Orford Park health and leisure development in Warrington, Cheshire.
The store - set to open in December - will form part of Warrington Borough Council's bid to regenerate a 50-acre (20.2-hectare) former landfill site, as well as enhancing a local park. Orford Park will include a community sports hub building comprising swimming pools; a fitness suite; dance studios; squash courts; a sports hall; and activity and meeting rooms.
Outdoor facilities proposed as part of the scheme include walking and cycling paths around new grass pitches; a floodlit bowling green; a pavilion; and a skateboarding and BMX area. Council executive director for environment and regeneration Andy Farrall said: "[Decathlon's] new store will not only create jobs in the local area but it is entirely in keeping with the sporting legacy of the site."
