Starwood Hotels and Resorts has opened its first Aloft-branded property in the UK with the launch of Aloft London Excel in the heart of the capital's Docklands today (31 October).

The development, which is located adjacent to the ExCeL venue, includes 252 loft-style guest rooms; the w xyz bar; the re:fuel by Aloft grab-and-go food pantry; and the re:charge gym.

Other facilities include the splash swimming pool and the re:mix lounge, an open space where guests can play pool. The guest rooms offer complimentary Bliss Spa products.

The Rockwell Group is behind the design of the Aloft concept, which has become the second Starwood brand to enter the UK this year, after the launch of W London-Leicester Square.

Aloft London Excel is the second European hotel for the Aloft brand and has been developed by ExCeL's parent company, Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company.

A spokesperson said: "Aloft is created to shake up the staid and traditional mid-market hotel sector by delivering urban-influenced design and an energetic guest experience at an affordable price point."

Northern Ireland-based developer and contractor McAleer and Rushe delivered the building under a design and build contract, with architects Jestico + Whiles also involved in the scheme.
