Stocksbridge Leisure Centre given reprieve
Stocksbridge Leisure Centre in South Yorkshire, has been given a reprieve after an agreement was reached between campaigners fighting to save the centre and Sheffield Council.
The city council has come to an agreement with Stocksbridge Town Council and 4SLC - a community action group who campaigned to save the centre with an aim of creating a sustainable sport and leisure facility in the local area.
Plans to close the centre came as part of a £50m set of cutbacks for Sheffield - with the leisure centre closure potentially saving the city council £400,000 a year.
A petition against the closure had earlier attracted around 1,500 signatures and Emma Gregory, chair of 4SLC, said that campaigners were delighted a solution had been found that meant the centre could be brought under control of the community.
The agreement had been made in return for a judicial review of the original closure decision being withdrawn by 4SLC.
