Strategic Leisure to tackle Kiev stadium
Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) has appointed Strategic Leisure to help it upgrade the Olimpiysky Stadium in Kiev ahead of the UEFA European Championships in 2012.
The UK-based sport consultancy has been tasked with assessing and evaluating the stadium and adjoining developments to ensure the venue is fully compliant with all UEFA requirements for hosting the final stages of the European Championships.
The stadium is currently undergoing a redevelopment, designed by German architects GMP, and Strategic Leisure is leading a team of UK specialists, including architects DLA, to assess the current masterplan for the stadium complex.
The appointment is part of plans to ensure that the venue complies with the rigorous UEFA requirements for match day accommodation, including spectator access, housing the thousands of broadcast and media professionals, merchandising, and the substantial corporate hospitality elements.
The news comes just days after UEFA, Europe's football governing body, warned FFU that it faces losing the right to host the tournament if improvements aren't made to the proposed venues.
Although the Olympiysky was the only Ukrainian stadium to have passed an initial UEFA inspection earlier this year, the governing body announced that Kiev could lose the right to host the Euro 2012 final - as was previously planned - if infrastructure issues are not addressed by 30 November.
Mark Sutcliffe, Strategic Leisure's chief executive, said: "There are a number of challenges to be faced, which we do not underestimate. We look forward to helping the Kiev authorities and other partners to tackle these."
Three other Ukrainian cities - Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv - are also yet to be confirmed as Euro 2012 host cities after it was decided that none are currently in a position to fulfil tournament requirements.
Ukraine is due to co-host the Euro 2012 tournament with Poland. Earlier, UEFA confirmed that the Polish cities of Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw and Wroclaw, have passed inspections and have been declared fit to host games.
