Streatham Leisure Centre closes
Streatham Leisure Centre, operated by Greenwich Leisure Limited, has closed until further notice due to health and safety concerns.
The centre's swimming pool was closed last week after an engineer's report raised concerns about the condition of the centre's roof, but further checks since then have revealed more widespread structural problems. Lambeth Council is now assessing the work needed to repair the building and in the meantime is directing users to the borough's other leisure centres in Clapham and Brixton.
Streatham swimmers were to have had access to a new pool as part of the Streatham Hub development, which would have provided both this and an ice rink; plus a state-of-the-art sports and leisure centre; a new Tesco supermarket; 250 new homes, some earmarked for affordable housing; and a new transport interchange. The project was approved in November last year but in February 2009 Tesco recommended that the contract be re-tendered. Work was then scheduled to begin in May but has been delayed due to the recession and its effect on the housing market.
