The hugely successful Street Sports programme, run by Anglia Community Leisure (ACL), has broken through the milestone funding figure of £100,000.

Street Sports is a diversionary sports project providing free activity in areas of identified need. The project runs in the Forest Heath District of Suffolk.

Since the inception of the ACL Street Sports project 2 years ago, over 350 sessions have been run, achieving over 11,000 attendances by young people in the area. Sessions are currently running in Brandon, Newmarket and Red Lodge.

The Suffolk Foundation, one of Street Sports' major funders, has provided the grant that has broken the £100,000 barrier. The grant of £990 from the Shadwell Fund will be used to fund projects running in Newmarket. A Suffolk Foundation grants officer said: "The Suffolk Foundation funds organisations in Suffolk that run projects that support the local community. Street Sports has demonstrated the need for the project and we are proud to be able to say it was one of our grants that put this programme over the £100,000 mark."

The ACL Street Sports project has a wide spectrum of funders, including the West Suffolk Community Safety Partnership, The National Lottery, Newmarket Town Council, Mildenhall Parish Council, Redbourn Engineering, Mildenhall Community Partnership, Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Police.

Keiran Williams, the ACL Street Sports Coordinator, says: "This project has done a lot of good work over the last few years. We started small but have grown into one of the leading youth projects in Suffolk. This would not have been possible without the support of our funders. Anglia Community Leisure is committed to providing this service for many years to come but we can only do this with funding. I would like to thank all the project funders as every penny that has been granted has made a real difference in the communities that this project delivers in."

Richard Balfe, Chairman of Anglia Community Leisure, says: "Keiran is right that this project is hugely dependent on the generosity of our funders but it would not have been as successful as it has without the energy and commitment from Keiran himself. He has believed in this project from the start and the results we have seen show that his passion and enthusiasm have really paid off."
