Study reveals Ryder Cup's economic impact
A new study published by the Welsh Assembly Government has found that the 2010 Ryder Cup - held at Newport's Celtic Manor Resort - boosted the nation's economy by £82.4m.
The total attendance of the event in October last year was 244,000, which was complemented by an extensive global television and media audience. During the week of the event, the Economic Impact Study confirmed that £82.4m was spent across the country - including £28.3m in Newport alone.
The research was carried out by IFM Sports Marketing Surveys, which involved more than 1,250 face-to-face interviews with spectators and 3,000 online interviews. Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "The Ryder Cup gave a very substantial boost to the Welsh economy during the week of the event and it will continue to deliver lasting benefits in terms of tourism, golf development and awareness of Wales as a place to do business."
