Surrey nature reserve plans finalised
Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) has unveiled its plans for a five-year scheme to improve visitor access to Chobham Common, following a two-year consultation process.
Managed by SWT on behalf of its owner, Surrey County Council, Chobham Common is also designated as a European Special Protection Area and a Special Area for Conservation. Around 300,000 people visit the common each year and the trust now aims to improve pathways and bridleways, increase communication and provide additional site information following the public consultation.
The measures form part of a five-year Visitor Plan for the site, which has already included repairs to the Fish Pool boardwalk, new benches and a number of improvements to rights of way near Roundabout car park. David Boddy, SWT area countryside manager, said: "While Chobham Common is really important for wildlife, it's also appreciated by visitors as a unique environment for recreation and relaxation.
"SWT wants to ensure that as many views on visitor improvements from the local community are adopted into our work as possible. Although the Visitor Plan is intended to run over a five year period, it will be reassessed regularly to ensure it continues to meet the needs of wildlife and people."
