The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea has announced a number of potential plans after it was handed a Beacon Company Award by the Arts Council of Wales, worth £110,000 over the next two years.

Screens showing images of works set aside for future display are among proposals for the gallery, as well as a more hands-on experience for visitors. A new programme of workshops will also be established featuring expert tuition on a number of art techniques. Staff at the gallery will also be able make more films and recordings available online as a result of the funding boost, as well as organising off-site activities to create projects across Swansea and to plan research for future exhibitions which uncover the local history of collections.

Swansea Council's curator of the gallery, Jenni Spencer-Davies, said: "Visitors nowadays at museums and galleries are seeking a more complete experience, and this funding means we'll be able to put some exciting plans into action to meet today's needs. "We hope these new facilities and programmes will be available here early in the New Year for everyone to enjoy."

The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is one of just 22 sites across Wales to earn a Beacon Company Award out of nearly 70 applicants. Graham Thomas, the council's cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism, said: "These plans will further enhance what's already a fantastic visitor experience at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. The gallery combines with attractions such as Swansea Museum and the National Waterfront Museum to ensure Swansea has a thriving cultural scene."
