Swansea Council's cabinet is to decide whether to support the principles of a feasibility study that could lead to the transformation of the city's former Oxford School site.

A mixed-use development boasting a new public square, cafés, restaurants and improvements to the setting of the Grand Theatre have been earmarked as part of the Picton Lanes Initiative. The study, which has examined regeneration options for the western end of the city's Oxford Street and West Way, has also called for a promotional brand and strong identity to be developed for the area.

If approved, the council will launch a public consultation to gather the views of local traders, stakeholders and residents, while funding could be secured from the Welsh Assembly Government's Building Enhancement Programme to carry out improvements to nearby properties. Swansea Council leader Chris Holley said: "This is purely a feasibility study at this stage but, (if the council decides to take it further) it will allow us to explore some of the ideas and opportunities that have been identified with key stakeholders such as traders and members of the public so that all views can be taken on board.

"This area is already characterised by a strong independent trader scene but what we're looking to do is boost its profile and identity and to make it more vibrant."
