Tate becomes world's most popular museum
One year after it opened, the Tate Modern of Modern Art has become the most popular museum in the world, with visitor figures of 5.25 million. This makes it the UK's third most popular tourist attraction, behind the Millennium Dome (6.5 million visitors) and the British Museum (5.7 million). The art gallery, built in the former Bankside power station, has contributed an estimated £50m to £70m to the borough of Southwark. There are plans now to extend with a piazza, shops, restaurants and performance space. Tate director, Nicholas Serota, says it has given enjoyment and education to a huge number of people. The museum has great appeal among young people, with half of its visitors aged under 35. The average stay ws two hours and 14 minutes.
