Tees Valley museum review launched
Five local authorities across the Tees Valley have teamed up to commission a review that will explore options to help secure the future of the region's museums.
It is hoped that the study will provide an optimal 'delivery model' for the management of attractions throughout the region amid a significant cut in public sector funding. Among museums currently run by local authorities is Hartlepool Art Gallery; the Museum of Hartlepool; and the Dorman Museum and Captain Cook Birthplace Museum - both in Middlesbrough.
Preston Hall Museum in Stockton-on-Tees; Kirkleatham Old Hall Museum; and Darlington Railway Museum are also operated by the respective councils. Middlesbrough Council director of museums and galleries Kate Brindley said: "These are challenging times with all public spending under close scrutiny, and the museum service is no exception.
"This review will help to ensure the Tees Valley's great museums can look to the future with confidence." Museum specialists Egeria are also working alongside the local authorities on the review, with findings due to be considered in early 2011 by the Tees Valley chief executives group.
