Andy Murray could line up alongside some of his biggest rivals in a European team as Tennis prepares to launch its own version of the Ryder Cup.

The Laver Cup will kick off in September 2017 and will pit a team of European players against a Rest of the World squad over a three-day competition. Named after the Australian 11-time major champion Rod Laver, the event will be held annually except for summer Olympic years.

A men’s European team could potentially include Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer – individuals who have dominated the game for over a decade. Teams will be made up of six players, with two selected by team captains and four qualifying through results. Singles and doubles matches will be included.

Laver said it was “good to see the sport of tennis finally develop a proper counterpart event to the Ryder Cup”.

“I can see this becoming a very important part of the experience of being a top global player, with the world’s best longing to earn the right to participate and thriving in this style of competition,” he added.
