Thackray Museum wins heritage award
The Thackray Museum in Leeds has won the Sandford Award for Heritage Education.
Awarded by the Heritage Education Trust, The Sandford Award recognises quality and excellence in education at heritage properties.
The Thackray Museum was designed to support the Medicine Through Time module in GCSE History and focuses on advances in public health and medicine since 1840. It attracts around 24,000 students every year.
The museum also recently won the Visitor Attraction of the Year award in the under 100,000 visitors category earlier this year at the Excellence in England Tourism awards.
Judges of the Heritage Education award said: “The Thackray Museum provides heritage education of the highest standard.
“Younger pupils learn about aspects of Victorian Britain through lively displays while older pupils have their textbooks brought to life and can add authenticity to their own projects.”
The museum’s education officer, Helen Patching, said: “We are thrilled to have received this award. Gaining a Sandford Award is a great achievement for the museum and it recognises the continuing development work in our education programmes.” Details: www.thackraymusuem.org
