The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) is inviting its members to explore an abandoned Berlin theme park during the year’s European Attractions Show (EAS).

Taking place on 25 September, ahead of the opening of the EAS showfloor, TEA members are being offered the chance to tour the abandoned spreepark, which first opened its doors in 1969 and at its peak attracted 1.7 million visitors a year.

According to the TEA, the tour will offer attendees the chance to “study what years of decay will do to a site”, also educating them on the city’s potential future plans for the park.

Spreepark hit financial trouble in 1999 and closed in 2002 when the park was declared bankrupt.

In recent times, Spreepark has been subject to a potential €10m (US$12m, £9.3m) redevelopment, with open space developer Grün Berlin GmbH exploring a possible restoration of the park, something the city’s leaders are still keen on achieving.

The 2015 plans called for the demolition of dilapidated structures, restoration of rides and the park’s Löcher – a bar which first opened in 1837. The park previously had seven rollercoasters, though only one remains, after the others were sold to other parks or demolished.
