Austrian spa design and equipment manufacturer Thermarium is working on a new two-level, 3,530sq m (37,997sq ft) extension of The Dubai Herbal & Treatment Center, tripling the health and wellness centre’s footprint and adding in an integrated spa.

Thermarium is responsible for the interior design, concept and layout of the centre, which is set to open by the end of 2015.

“(The DHTC) is a fully-integrated medical centre, where wellness treatments and health therapies complement and enrich each other,” Adrian Egger, managing director of Thermarium told Spa Opportunities.

The DHTC was originally opened in 2003 to provide complementary remedies along with allopathic health treatments, and has grown and added treatments over the past 12 years. It offers physiotherapy, dermatology, homeopathy, osteopathy, psychology, hydrocolon therapy, gynaecology, reproduction diagnostics, children’s therapies, ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, tuina, shiatsu and preventative medicine.

“In form and content, the focus on the DHTC is the harmony between tradition and high-end processes – the combination between ancient knowledge of different cultures and the newest insights in modern medicine,” said Egger.

Egger added that the design of the centre is light, modest and restrained, with calming green and clear tones and wide open areas.

“The prime goal was to achieve an atmosphere which does not reflect a clinical or hospital surrounding, but a comfortable and welcoming ambiance which invites the guests in an unobtrusive manner,” said Egger.

The centre includes an integrated spa with a male and female section, and features Finnish saunas, steam baths, bio saunas, ice fountains, experience showers and relaxation areas. A retail area, along with a healthy restaurant, comprise about 25 per cent of the space.

“The DHTC offers a perfect symbiosis between conventional, complementary and alternative medicine, which is tailor-made for the guest and can as well consist in medical treatments or wellness treatments,” said Egger.

Thermarium is also heading up the design at Norway's 10,500sq m (113,000sq ft) spa complex The Well, set to open at the end of 2015.
