Six Flags Magic Mountain is to open three new roller coasters in 2011, increasing the number of coasters at the Valencia, California theme park to 18.

The Green Lantern ride, a vertical track, spinning coaster designed and engineered by Intamin, is the first of its type in the US. The coaster will be joined by a new family-orientated coaster adjacent to Bugs Bunny World.

The third new ride will be the redeveloped Superman : Escape coaster, which is to be relaunched as Superman : Escape from Krypton. Visitors aboard Green Lantern - which is to be situated in the newly themed section of the park - will travel in eight-person vehicles, four abreast and back-to-back, each rotating independently.

The two-minute ride begins with a 107ft (33m) lift hill, before riders spin their way down through 825ft (252m) of twisted vertical track, featuring three, 360˚ head-over-heel spins. Unlike traditional coasters, Superman: Escape from Krypton will send riders at 100mph (161kph) backwards in newly-designed cars on a dual track that spans 900ft (274m) and rises 415ft (127m) in the air, forming an 'L' shaped superstructure.

Riders will hang face first with a birds-eye-view of the entire Santa Clarita Valley before plummeting back down to earth. The new children's ride lasts around a minute and is a 679ft (207m) steel coaster with a 28ft (8.5m) lift hill and which reaches speeds up to 21mph (34kph). A single train comprises eight cars with riders sitting two across in a single row.
