Tower of London’s heritage status is threatened
The Tower of London’s World Heritage Status could reportedly be under threat.
The government and heritage groups have previously expressed concern about proposals for building a series of skyscrapers near to the Tower.
According to The Times, the 900-year-old attraction will now be visited by inspectors next week in order to decide whether it should retain its status as a World Heritage property or be put on an ‘in danger’ list.
The decision of the inspectors could also seriously affect future developments in the centre of the city, including the 1,000ft (206m) Shard of Glass Tower at London Bridge and the 1,060ft (324m) Bishopsgate tower.
Unesco’s World Heritage Committee has previously ruled that developments around the Tower don’t appear to respect its status. Details: whc.unesco.org
