A new £20m multi-sports complex in South Lanarkshire will be home to Scotland's first 'tribute' golf course.
The 9-hole course, based on some of the most famous holes in golf, will form part of the 100-acre Playsport Scotland site at East Kilbride, which will combine golf, football, tennis and swimming at the UK's most advanced sports centre. The complex will also feature a 220,000sq ft sports hub to house a range of world-class sport and leisure facilities, including a 25m swimming pool, one of the UK's largest indoor tennis centres and a 25,000sq ft health and fitness centre. A 58-bay two-tiered driving range, 36,000sq ft kids' zone and over 20,000sq ft of retail space and restaurants are also among the plans. Playgolf Holdings is behind the development, in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and Kilmartin Property Group. The development follows the success of the company's Playgolf facilities in London and Manchester which are designed specifically for the newly-launched PowerPlay Golf, seen as golf's equivalent to Twenty20 cricket. Jimmy Wallace, commercial director for Playgolf, said: "The dearth of good quality public sports facilities in Britain is now an acute national problem, and the appetite to change this, particularly within government and local authorities, is growing enormously. "A key part of our offering is about bringing down the barriers that exist in golf and tennis - or any of the sports we feature - by increasing access and encouraging participation." Playsport Scotland is expected to open in March 2009, and will create around 200 new jobs. There are also plans to replicate the concept at other sites around the UK although nothing has yet been confirmed.
