Two stadiums out of 11 ready for Euro 2016
With the 2016 European Football Championships in France three years away, only the Stade de France and Lille's new 50,000-seater stadium are fully ready out of the nine to 11 stadiums planned to be used during the tournament.
The task of completing the stadiums in time however, isn't as challenging as it was for Euro 2012 - co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland - according to UEFA president Michel Platini. "In Ukraine, stadiums were supposed to be finished in 2010 and some of them were completed in March 2012,” said Platini. “I hope the stadiums in France are ready as quickly as possible.”
Nice's new ground is expected to be completed next year, while Saint-Etienne and Marseille are currently halfway through planned renovations. Bordeaux has just begun its own ground renovations and Lyon's new 58,000-seater Stade des Lumieres is scheduled to hold its first games during the 2015-16 season.
Jacques Lambert, president of the European Championship organising committee also said that three other stadiums would be starting renovations between May and Autumn, with Lens, Parc des Princes (Paris Saint Germain) and Toulouse all expected to be ready in autumn 2015.
