A partnership between Greenwich Leisure (GLL) and Lambeth Council will see the UK’s largest dedicated kids health and fitness facility launch at the Brixton recreation Centre this week (20 October).

Called The Zone, the 9,300sq ft (864sq m) centre will have the capacity to proved activities and classes for 200 young people at any one time.

The facility comprises three zones – called Energy, Fitness and Team – which offer a wide variety of physical activities.

The Energy zone brings together games such as Tizzball and Sportwall with football and basketball, and also includes a 3,830sq ft (356sq m) activity area and a climbing wall.

Children can also take part in track and field sports, as Energy also has a 50m running track, high jump and long jump.

The 280sq m (3,010sq ft) Fitness zone incorporates a range of fitness equipment by SHOKK, and a dance studio fitted with dance mats supplied by ZigZag.

The Team zone, the smallest of the three areas at 228sq m (2,400sq ft), features a third-generation artificial pitch, enabling football and rugby to be taught and played in a dedicated environment.

The centre plans to forge links with local football clubs – such as Fulham FC – to ensure courses are taught by top trainers.

The Zone is the result of three years research and aims to play a key role within the local community by keeping young people off the streets and increasing physical activity.

Lambeth Council has invested £750,000 in the facility, which is part of a wider £2.7m investment by the council in Brixton.

Steve Ward, spokesperson for GLL, said: “The Zone is the result of extensive research and collaborative working with Lambeth Council. It brings together all aspects of youth fitness, including the latest innovations from across the UK under one roof.
