The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) expects international arrivals to reach one billion during 2012, following continued growth over the last 12 months.

International tourism arrivals increased by more than 4 per cent to 980 million in 2011, with set to continue - albeit at a "somewhat slower rate" over the course of the next 12 months.

UNWTO's figures come despite a protracted recovery in the global economy; the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami; and political unrest across the Middle East and North Africa.

Europe was the best performing region with international arrivals up by 6 per cent last year, while South America was the top sub-region and reported an increase of 10 per cent.

Middle Eastern tourism was down by 8 per cent for 2011, but it is expected to record 5 per cent growth in 2012. Locations such as the United Arab Emirates saw a steady increase.

For the African region, international arrivals were up 2 million to 50 million as locations in Sub-Saharan areas offset losses incurred by North African destinations.

UNWTO said international arrivals are to increase by between 3-4 per cent in 2012 and will push the number above one billion, with emerging economies to record stronger growth.

"International tourism hit new records in 2011 despite the challenging conditions," said UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai.

"These results are encouraging, coming as they do at a time in which we urgently need levers to stimulate growth and job creation."
