US$100m Brookfield Zoo expansion
Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, US, is set to undertake a US$100m (£49.6 m, 73.4m euro) expansion and revamp programme.
The renovation scheme will provide new animal enclosures and updated exhibits as well as educational facilities.
During phase one, the zoo’s existing picnic area will be relocated, the elephant’s outdoor and indoor enclosures will be increased fourfold and tenfold, respectively, new facilities for birds and reptiles will be built, the dolphin pools will be renovated and a new education centre will be constructed.
This initial phase is due for completion in 2011.
In the second phase, new exhibits for the zoo’s marine animals will be created and an outdoor enclosure will be built to house the existing gorilla population.
This huge undertaking is expected to boost annual visitor numbers by 500,000.
