A US$68m (£43.3m) plan to transform Jefferson Barracks in St Louis, Missouri, US, has been proposed.

According to the Jefferson Barracks Master Plan, commissioned by the St Louis County Economic Council and funded by the Office of Economic Adjustment, Department of Defense, the project would see the National Guard Base transformed into a national military history tourism destination with "museums, re-enactments, historic trails and scenic river overlooks".

The report said that the "key to success" with regard to funding would be with a "public-private mechanism to capture the increase in area property and economic activity revenue, continued fundraising efforts by the private independent museum organisations and the financial support of county, state and federal government".

As far as organisation goes, the plan suggested that the attraction should evolve from a volunteer committee to a membership organisation of independent partners, to a regionally-funded organisation to an "end-state umbrella organisation/corporation potentially combined with state or National Park Service ownership or management".

Visitors to the barracks are expected to reach 180,000 to 250,000 by the completion of the master plan in 2026.
