Ukraine receives Euro 2012 warning

UEFA president Michel Platini has told the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) that Kiev could lose the right to host the Euro 2012 final if infrastructure issues are not addressed by 30 November.

Ukraine is due to co-host the tournament with Poland, and the warning follows an announcement by European football's governing body that the Polish cities of Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw and Wroclaw, have all been confirmed as host cities. Kiev has also been confirmed by UEFA as a host city for group matches, quarter final matches and a semi-final, but the governing body refused to rubber-stamp the city as the venue for the final unless it can address issues relating to the stadium, airport, regional transport and accommodation infrastructure.

Three other Ukrainian cities - Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv - are also yet to be confirmed as Euro 2012 host cities after it was decided that none are currently in a position to fulfil tournament requirements, although Platini remains committed to staging the event in Eastern Europe. Platini said: "There are numerous infrastructure issues that urgently need to be resolved in Ukraine to convince the UEFA executive Committee that the host city candidates can be appointed as Euro 2012 host cities.

"We must respect the decision of the executive committee of 18 April 2007, when it awarded the organisation of the European Football Championship 2012 to Poland and Ukraine." UEFA will review the Ukrainian situation again in December.
