Plans for the development of a new multi-million pound sports complex on the site of the University of Oxford's existing Iffley Road facilities have been unveiled at a new public consultation.

Designed by Faulkner Brown Architects, the project will see the Iffley Road centre completely overhauled in order to provide facilities for more than 80 indoor sports, while the existing swimming pool will be integrated into the main venue. The university has already received approval from Oxford City Council (OCC) for the development of a new tennis centre but is now aiming to gather comments on the sports centre proposals before submitting a planning application in spring.

Proposed facilities at the new complex include one double-sized and one single-sized sports hall linked by a timber and glass structure housing the main entrance and atrium foyer, a two-storey gym, a café/restaurant and sporting rooms. The grandstand at the site's running track - where Roger Bannister broke the four-minute-mile barrier in 1954 - will also be replaced by a new building to house an indoor cricket school, a projectiles range, spectator seating and changing rooms.

Jon Roycroft, director of sport at the University of Oxford, said: "We are now moving onto the challenge of fully developing plans for the University to fundraise and build the highest quality indoor sports facilities for the 21st century and accommodate growth for the next fifty years. "These much needed facilities will be used by university sports teams, the university at large and importantly the local community as individual members of the fitness/health facilities and where appropriate as members of enlarged 'open' based sports clubs, such as judo and fencing which aren't already well established in the city."
