VisitBritain plans Jamestown festival for 2007
National tourism agency VisitBritain has appointed Deirdre Livingstone to head up its Jamestown 2007 project.
The project celebrates the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia and Livingstone will lead the development, implementation and promotion of a programme of events, festivals and exhibitions throughout the country to highlight the historic links between the US and Britain.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to head up such an exciting project that will encourage US visitors to come to Britain and discover where their early pioneers set out from nearly 400 years ago,” said Livingstone.
“Many of those early venturers came from Kent, the east of England and the south east. Our aim is to enthuse and galvanise all regions of Britain to engage in this special anniversary, showcasing their own historic links with those early American settlements. We will also weave an important genealogy tourism component into the campaign so as to inspire people to come to Britain on their own personal odyssey.” Details: www.visitbritain.com/corporate
