Visitor Centre in Whitby Abbey House
A £5.6m visitor centre next to the ruins of Whitby Abbey is set to open on Easter Saturday, March 30.
Built in the shell of a 17th Century house adjoining the medieval Abbey, the Whitby Abbey Headland Project aims to give better public access to the historic site in North Yorkshire.
Designed by architects, Stanton Williams, the two storey visitor centre displays artefacts excavated from the headland and presents Whitby's history from the Anglo-Saxon period to the 20th Century using computer generated videos.
'Following the problems tourism faced during 2001, we hope this investment will make a significant contribution to tourism in Yorkshire and give people a more enjoyable and rewarding experience when they visit Whitby's dramatic and historic headland,' said David Fraser from English Heritage, which owns and operates the site.
The four-year project has been achieved by a partnership between English Heritage, Scarborough Borough Council and the Strickland Estate, with additional contributions from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
