WHUFC submits Olympic Stadium bid
West Ham United Football Club (WHUFC), together with Newham Council, has submitted its bid to take over the Olympic Stadium to the Olympic Park Legacy Company.
The Premier League club is planning to establish the venue as its new home once the 2012 Games have ended, while also creating a "vibrant centre of sport, education and culture". Under the proposals, the majority of the Olympic Stadium structure would remain, boasting a seating capacity of 60,000 and capable of accommodating football, athletics, concerts and other sports.
WHUFC vice chair Karren Brady said: "The last thing anyone wants is for the Olympic Stadium to become a ghost of Olympics past. "The only realistic solution is to make the stadium work for a Premier League football team and that should be West Ham United."
The bid is also supported by Essex County Cricket Club (ECCC), which could see the Olympic Stadium hosting Twenty20 cricket following the Games. An ECCC spokesperson confirmed that the club is considering the possibility of playing at least one home Twenty20 fixture at the venue, although nothing has yet been decided.
