WPBC to consider Chesil Beach proposals
Plans for a £1m expansion of a visitor centre at Cheshil Beach, Dorset, are due to be considered by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council (WPBC) on 6 July.
The council, working in partnership with Dorset Council Council (DCC) and Dorset Wildlife Trust, is planning to advance a bid for support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) as part of the scheme. It is hoped that the HLF will contribute £500,000 towards the proposals, with match-funding from a range of sources allowing work to be carried out at Chesil Beach Centre.
Plans include improved educational and lecture room facilities; access improvements for people with disabilities; and the conservation of wildlife habitats as part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. A report due to go before WPBC's management committee calls for the HLF funding bid to be taken forward and for match funds to be secured, as well as completing future management agreements.
The report said: "Following the designation of the Dorset and East Devon Coast as the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and in order to help interpret this globally significant designation, an extension to the Chesil Centre has been planned for some years. "To assist in the bid preparation, use has been made of an external advisor who has been involved in successfully securing funding for the Durlston World Heritage Visitor Centre."
