Wakefield One museum opened by Sir David Attenborough
A new museum and library has launched at the centre of the Merchant Gate development in Wakefield, Yorkshire.
Wakefield One, which was officially opened by wildlife presenter Sir David Attenborough, is located on the ground floor in the council's new civic building.
The museum invites visitors to explore and engage with the history of the people of Wakefield. The main displays tell the story of the people who shaped the regions history through themes such as love, war, play and crime.
A display is devoted to eco-warrior Charles Waterton, the 19th century naturalist and explorer born nearby at Walton Hall. This section gives visitors the chance to stand on the back of the caiman crocodile that he famously captured on one of his trips to South America.
The new museum also includes a temporary exhibition gallery. It will showcase a varied programme of displays inspired by the museum's collections, loans from other people and places and it will be a space to share the museum’s work with local groups.
Sir David Attenborough said: "I am particularly pleased that a space has been found to celebrate Charles Waterton.
"He is not as widely celebrated as he should be, for he is a very distinguished citizen and his achievements should be celebrated - he is getting his proper due here."
