Wastwater voted Britain’s favourite view
The British public has voted Wastwater in the Lake District’s Wasdale Valley it’s favourite domestic view in a televised poll celebrating the diversity and splendour of the nation’s landscapes.
In the live final of Britain’s Favourite View, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald on ITV, the Cumbrian outlook triumphed over the Gower Peninsula in Wales, Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland and Stangford Lough in Northern Ireland.
The National Trust owned and managed lake and mountain won the accolade for its remote, unspoiled and dramatic landscape.
At almost three miles long, half a mile wide and 258 feet deep, Wastwater is the deepest lake in England, and is overlooked by England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, at 3,210 feet.
Sheona Southern, marketing director at Cumbria Tourism, said: “Wastwater is one of many fantastic views we have to offer. We live in a beautiful part of the world that is appreciated by around 16 million visitors every year and we are very proud to show it off to many more.”
The series featured 16 landscapes, all of which have been included on a map published by VisitBritain. Details: www.britainsviews.com
