As the war on obesity gets underway, health and fitness club chain, Esporta, has announced the launch of Weigh to Go, a dedicated weight loss membership.

The 12-month membership has been designed in response to member feedback and in conjunction with the Weight Management Centre (WMC), which was founded in 2001 in response to the growing obesity problem.

The WMC team comprises nutritionists and fitness experts and its programme is based on a successful trial involving more than 500 overweight people.

“This is an integrated membership package which supports people through an entire year for a standard membership fee,” sayid Esporta’s group fitness manager, Mark Talley.

“Most operators have added weight loss to membership as a bolt-on extra,” he said.

Promoted at club level by general managers, the structured programme includes nutritional education, support and advice, as well as a tailored exercise plan.

Members will go through Esporta’s On Track programme for the first eight weeks to introduce them to regular exercise.

Launched in January this year, On Track is a three-stage programme for new members, which involves three one-to-one consultations.

Following this, members will take part in group education sessions for a further eight weeks. These sessions will include weigh-ins, body fat and waist measurement, as well as talks on psychology of food, motivation, weight loss, understanding food labels and general nutrition.

After the initial 16 weeks, Weigh to Go members will attend monthly follow-up seminars and weigh-ins for the next eight months and new exercise programmes will be available every four weeks.

The seminars will cover a range of topics from free radicals and antioxidants to chocolate and alcohol and stress management.
