Welsh college announces new gallery name
Cardiff's Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) has announced that its new exhibition gallery - part of a £22.5m development - is to be called the Linbury Gallery.
It comes after Lord and Lady Sainsbury of Preston Candover contributed £250,000 through the Linbury Trust as part of the RWCMD's fundraising campaign for the project. The RWCMD has already unveiled the new exhibition space, which is housing the Society of British Theatre Design Exhibition until 16 April.
RWCMD director of drama Sean Crowley said: "We are already using the space to present the Society of British Theatre Design exhibition, and are looking forward to using the Linbury Gallery to showcase the College's talented design students in the future." Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the overall development at the institution will be completed in June. Facilities will include the 160-seat Richard Burton Theatre.
A 450-capacity chamber recital hall - one of the first such facilities in Wales - is also part of the Hamiltons-designed scheme and will be named the Dora Stoutzker Hall. The facility has been named after the mother of philanthropist Ian Stoutzsker, who provided £500,000 towards the RWCMD development.
Willmott Dixon has been the main contractor on the development.
