Welsh ministers opens £7m Pont Y Werin
Welsh deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones and environment minister Jane Davidson have opened a new pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the River Ely in Cardiff Bay.
Pont Y Werin - the People's Bridge - is designed to provide access to the Vale of Glamorgan and the Cardiff International Sports Village, and includes a 20m (66ft) opening section to allow river traffic to pass. Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council worked alongside the Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff Harbour Authority to fund and develop the new bridge.
Davidson said: "Development of bridges like the one here at Pont y Werin is a key element of the Assembly Government's Walking and Cycling Action Plan. We know that if we get the built environment right, people will cycle and walk more regularly."
