West London to receive Olympic-size pool
The London Borough of Hillingdon will be home to the first new 50m swimming pool to be built in West London for nearly 40 years.
Hillingdon Council has earmarked £22m for the development of a new sports and leisure centre and has finalised additional funding to enable a 50m pool to be built as part of the complex.
The pool will be built to Olympic standards and will boast a movable floor and booms, allowing for the space to be used as two 25m pools
Other facilities at the centre will include an athletics stadium, sports hall and health and fitness club.
The development will be built adjacent to the existing Uxbridge open-air pool, which dates from the 1930s and will also receive a revamp.
Additional funding for the site will be provided by the London Development Agency (LDA), which will provide £2.025m and Sport England (£1.5m).
Manny Lewis, chief executive, LDA, said: “The new 50m pool will put Hillingdon on the map in terms of first-class sporting facilities, providing and excellent recreation venue for local residents as well as bringing wider regeneration benefits for the community.”
