The water quality in some spas and swimming pools could be putting bathers at risk according to a report by consumer magazine Which?

Out of 61 pools that were randomly tested by the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) for disinfectant levels, water temperature and pH values, more than half failed to reach an acceptable standard. Twelve actually posed a health risk, with three of those deemed 'a potentially serious risk'.

The report found that by introducing things like sweat and urine to water, it is bathers themselves that are responsible for the majority of bacteria in pools, but residues from shampoos and creams can contribute as well. Incorrect disinfectant levels were also cited as a problem.

The quality of water in spa pools was found to be significantly worse than that in swimming pools, with one in three being labelled 'inadequate', but the tests revealed there was no notable difference between the quality of public and private swimming pools.

A spokesman from Fitness First health clubs, which were referred to in the report, commented: 'It should be recognised that spa water quality can change very quickly due to heavy bathing loads and poor personal hygiene, and may occasionally be out of balance. In these circumstances the pool will be closed until the balance is redressed.'

The report advises that pool operators encourage swimmers to shower before entering the pool, and to try and keep overcrowding to a minimum. Which? also calls for mandatory regulations and a legally enforceable national standard on pool water quality.

Ralph Riley, chairman of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group and chief executive of the ISRM agreed, saying: 'Regulation would help ensure that all pools and spas are operated to a certain standard, this should be the right of every pool user.'
