Wildlife experience for Al Fayed
Mohamed Al Fayed is to turn part of his Scottish estate into an upmarket pub and lodging development to complement existing plans for 65, £1m ‘jet set’ homes within his Highlands property.
The Harrods owner has spent more than 30 years building up his Balnagown estate to 65,000 acres.
The new luxury homes will be built within a 200-acre disused quarry overlooking the Cromarty Firth in Ross-shire.
Redundant farm buildings on site will be used for the multi-use development, which will be designed as somewhere both visitors and locals could enjoy.
Estate manager, Gordon Robertson, said: “We’d like to create something themed around wildlife that would combine a pub, a lodging area of 10 rooms and a restaurant.
“We’ll also open up walks on the estate so visitors can truly appreciate the wildlife – we’re currently in the process of releasing red kites onto the estate and would like to combine that with introducing other rare breeds synonymous with Scotland.”
Initial plans will now be submitted within two weeks. Details: www.balnagown-estates.co.uk
