Thornton Tomasetti served Wimbledon project
Engineering design experts Thornton Tomasetti have been selected to work on the £70m (US$92.8m, €83.4m) project to renovate Wimbledon’s No. 1 Court.
The studio will work alongside KSS Architects to provide structural and facade design engineering services for the new development, which will include a retractable roof.
Improved public facilities, 15 new hospitality suites and an increased capacity to 12,000 seats will also be included in the project.
Thornton Tomasetti has designed the moving roof, which will feature “long span triangular trusses” and which is supported by another static roof.
“We feel very privileged to be part of this project,” said the firm’s UK director Tanya de Hoog. “The quantity and quality of design that has gone into this building from the whole design team is remarkable. From a structural perspective, the integration of new components stitched into an existing building adds another layer of complexity.”
The redevelopment – which is part of the larger Wimbledon masterplan concept which began in 2013 – is set to be completed by 2019.
