Windsor's new Guildhall museum launches
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) has launched a new museum at Windsor's Grade I-listed Guildhall, following a five-month renovation scheme.
Located in the historic property's Maidenhead Room, the 'sensitive' refurbishment featured the installation of audio visual equipment to bring the history of the town to life. The £800,000 overhaul was funded by RBWM (£500,000), the Friends of the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum's appeal and developers' contributions.
Among the features of the new Guildhall museum is the opportunity for the public to explore the Ascot Room - where HRH Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles. Exhibits include a mammoth's tusk, an Anglo-Saxon bone comb and a bust of Sir Sydney Camm, the designer of the Hawker Hurricane aeroplane.
RBWM cabinet member for adult and community services Simon Dudley said: "Our aim is to make the museum a family-friendly place where people of all ages can enjoy delving into the Royal Borough's fascinating past. "We are very keen to capture the interest of young people and I hope more of them will see volunteering as a helpful step towards their future working lives."
